Local restaurant Dine In has had recent problems with their electricity. They contacted us to install a new breaker and we discovered that they needed a complete electrical revamp. Instead of putting up the standard electrical systems, this client wanted to become a eco-friendly and have alternative energy sources. Wind power and solar power were our recommendations. Wind power is a fraction of the cost of regular electricity over the macro economic scale. Plus wind power is clean and friendly to the environment. Solar power is a constant source of energy. Even when the sky is clouding you can all derive some energy from the sun. Although up front costs can be expensive for alternative energy sources like wind and solar, the long term benefits are inmeasurable.

Most of us are concerned about wasting energy because it affects our pocketbook. Here are some tips for reducing your energy consumption.

Lighting

Leaving lights on around the house can cause your energy bill to skyrocket. Make sure you turn off lights whenever you leave a room. Double check your lights before leaving your home to ensure that unnecessary lighting is not left on for extensive period of time.

Light Bulbs

Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), which use one-fourth of the energy and last 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs. According to the United States Department of Energy, using CFLs instead of incandescent bulbs can save you nearly 50 percent in lighting costs.

Electronics

Our electronic toys are not only expensive to purchase but can be expensive to operate if we’re not careful. Electronics that are plugged into our homes’ energy outlets are constantly draining energy. Some of these are constantly left running and costing use money. Check all of your electronics and make sure they are powered off or disconnected from the power source when not in use. This will prevent unnecessary energy consumption and will save you money each month.

Clean Up

Be careful not to run your dishwasher or your washing machine/dryer on half loads. Always wait until you have a full load before running these cleaning machines. Most of these machines consume alot of resources, both energy and water. Reducing the number of loads you run each week will certainly contribute to a more eco-friendly lifestyle.

Most of these tips are just common sense. Sometimes it’s the most valuable sense.
